IR Receiver

I was looking for a cheap solution cheap solution to remote control my PC. I stumbled accross a homebrew ir receiver at the Lirc Project and the c't project Ein Pinguin sieht (infra)rot. Both pages use a similar, simple setup to build a serial reciever.
Order list
I ordered all parts at Reichelt Elektronik. The prices are a bit old, so they might have changed in the meantime.

Build
It is a bit tricky to arrange all parts in the small case.
Install
The software installation under Linux took me quite some time. First of all you should get the latest stable release from the Lirc Project. Select "Home-brew (16x50 UART compatible serial port)" at the driver configuration. Next you need a linux kernel with serial port support compiled as a module and you need to make sure that "lirc_serial.o" is loaded before "serial.o".
If you made it so far, connect the ir receiver and run "mode2". Now aim your remote control at the receiver and watch the screen. You should see all kind of weired numbers.
